Beth Shuman shares her story of leaving her day job, morning matcha & a Castor Oil Hack
1. FOR THE DAYDREAMERS~Any advice for someone who wants to quit their day job & follow their dreams?
I didn't actually have a dream to start a beauty brand, but I did feel that I was burning out as a TV producer and I started to have the thoughts of what else could I do. I think once that seed was planted and I knew I was ready for change, things started to unfold. I'm still able to satisfy the creative itch and often compare building the brand to creating a TV series. My advice is don't get caught up in looking too far down the line, that can be a little scary. Start creating what you want to do, visualize it and tap into how you want to feel when you are doing it. I created a Pinterest board and an IG account just for inspiration and images that resonated with me. A friend who was randomly (or pure kismet) following my new IG account said what I was creating caught his eye and it inspired him to offer his help to kick it off. If your energy is in something then it's already happening. I love what Bob Proctor says; "If you can hold it in your head, you can hold it in your hand."
2. MORNING RITUALS?
I love matcha ninja with almond milk from Greenhouse juice (both Canadian companies) I’ll take my dog out for a walk, then check my emails. Resisiting the urge to pick up my phone when I first open my eyes has been a game changer.
3. BEAUTY SECRETS?
I keep my routine pretty simple~Micellar water to wash my face, Thayers Witch Hazel toner and then I follow with my Brilliance Serum. I also love the benefits of Castor oil packs for lymphatic treatments. For a treat I’ll get a Buccal facial massage, it’s amazing how much tension we can hold in our faces, releasing the fascia really does get the blood flowing, relaxes the jaw, improves circulation, plumps the lips and it can even lift your jowls. (me immediately looking for someone in LA)
Castor oil packs~A castor oil pack is a piece of wool or a cloth soaked in castor oil and applied to the skin. The cloth may be cotton flannel or other dense material that can soak up a lot of liquid. I place it on my abdomen over the liver area then place a small plastic sheet over the castor oil pack. This helps to heat it and then just press against your skin for about 45 min.
4. ZEN ZONE?
My zen zone would be my cottage in a lake area called Muskoka which is a couple hours outside of Toronto. I bought it many years ago as a run down century old cottage with a couple of outbuildings that I've spent time restoring. It's been very cathartic bringing the property back to life. The setting is so tranquil that you can't help but feel restored yourself . I love hosting friends and family there~
5. INSPIRATION?
I feel inspired daily, I feel like my brain is a little workshop that never closes! I look at IG accounts for inspo, but where I find the most clarity and inspiration is when I go for trail walks. It's when the 'noise' falls away and I can conjure, plan, visuailize and feel grounded in my intention. As crazy as the idea may be for my business or in my personal life, I feel it comes to life out on the path ~
6. GUILTY PLEASURE?
My guilty pleasure is chocolate mint ice cream, dill pickle chips (might be a Canadian thing) and an afternoon nap on the weekend...in no particular order ~
7. BOOKSHELF?
Paulo Coelho, I Ching (Bobby Klein), Carolyn Myss & Good Night Construction Site
8. SCENT MEMORY?
Love this question, pretty sure I wore every scent by Calvin Klein at some point in my teens. I had a Body Shop Dewberry moment overwhelming everyone within 10 feet of me. I recenlty caught a whiff of Drakkar Noir and was transported back to junior high. My teen years were definitely a heavily perfumed era.
9. LOCAL GUIDE~TORONTO/NYC

10. BEAUTY/STYLE MUSE?

11. CURRENTLY DAYDREAMING?
I've been working on a full range of products and sourcing incredible actives that are almost mythical. I can’t wait for them to spring to life~
I’m also dreaming of my trip to Montana for some serious sunsets and star gazing.

My point of view
as a Makeup Artist~
The 8 faces solid oil is a game changer.
I am kind of a balm/serum addict and this one is essential AF ~❣
I haven’t met Beth in person yet, but we met during the pandemic on IG and realized we had a lot in common. I was at home like everyone else wanting to find inspiration and products to test to keep me busy. Beth graciously sent me my first jar of the Boundless Oil and I was hooked. The boundless oil is great for hands, feet, hair, face or anywhere you want to add a little love. I like to slug with it as my last step in my night time skincare routine. 8 faces second product is equally crush worthy, The Brilliance Serum. It’s a gorgeous silky serum with Rose hip Oil, Pomegranate, Lotus and all kinds of goodness for regeneration & radiance. I am so grateful that I discovered this beautiful brand and I am excited to watch 8 faces grow. You really can quit your day job and succeed !! I am sure we will meet Beth someday soon~Denise
